Selectmen discuss railroad crossing, truck traffic and dust-control measures with Specialty Minerals

First Selectman Brian Ohler told the Board of Selectmen he has held multiple conversations with Specialty Minerals and the railroad about cleanup, dust control, crossings and truck traffic and described those conversations as positive.
Ohler said Specialty Minerals has invested in dust-collection equipment and that the railroad is planning a new crossing at the end of Pease Street. As a temporary and possible long-term measure to address horn noise, the board discussed blocking Lime Kiln Road so trains would not need to sound horns; traffic would be rerouted up Daisy Hill. Ohler said he will consult the ambulance chief, fire chief and resident trooper to ensure closing the road would not impede emergency response.
The board also discussed a plan for a safety manager to inspect truck trips daily to check for loose rocks or boulders from trucks and reported the railroad may gift a used road sweeper to the town to help keep roads clear. No formal action to close Lime Kiln Road was taken; the item was discussed as a potential mitigation measure requiring further review by emergency services and legal advice where needed.
