North Canaan voters approve municipal and elementary budgets; resident trooper contract removed

Assistant Town Clerk Marilisa Camardi called the Town of North Canaan annual budget meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. on May 21, 2025, at Town Hall, 100 Pease Street.
Voters approved the municipal portion of the budget, as recommended by the Board of Finance, after officials moved to use paper ballots. Christian Allyn moved to vote by paper ballot; Stacey Dodge seconded. Ballots were collected and counted by Registrar of Voters Patricia Keilty and Clementine “Bunny” McGuire. The motion passed with 54 ballots cast: 44 in favor and 10 opposed.
The meeting also considered the North Canaan Elementary Education portion of the budget. Michael O’Connor moved to approve the education budget; Matthew Devino seconded. The item passed by verbal vote with no opposing votes recorded.
An item to consider a proposed two‑year Resident Trooper contract was removed from the agenda and no action was taken because no contract had been provided prior to the meeting. The agenda’s fourth item invited other business; none was presented.
Brian Allyn Sr was nominated and approved to serve as moderator following a nomination by Michael O’Connor and a second by John Jacquier. Douglas Humes moved to close the meeting; John Jacquier seconded. The meeting adjourned at 7:14 p.m.
