The Norfolk Board of Education on May 26 approved its April Monthly Expenditure Report and heard reports on budget projections, grants and operational changes for the 2026–27 school year.
Superintendent Kevin D. Case reviewed April check authorizations and the monthly expenditure report before the board moved, by motion of Virginia Coleman‑Prisco and seconded by Amy Bennett, to approve the report. The motion was unanimously approved.
Case said initial end‑of‑fiscal‑year projections show roughly $50,000 of potentially unexpended special‑education funds. He also reported that the town has resolved a minimum budget requirement issue after voters approved transferring funds to the board’s 2025–26 budget.
The superintendent told the board the town received $2,216 in Supplemental Education Assistance funds and a $32,000 DRIP (District Repair and Improvement Program) grant. DRIP funds may be used for repair, maintenance or improvements to school facilities and must be expended by June 30, 2027.
On student services, Case said that starting in the 2026–27 school year all students will receive free breakfast and families who previously qualified for reduced‑price lunches will receive free lunches.
Principal Lauren Valentino reported end‑of‑year instructional activities and initiatives including teacher‑student "data chats" tied to MAP assessment goals, VR learning experiences for primary grades and a 3‑D marine‑animals project for intermediate grades. She also noted staff appreciation events, a K‑2 field trip to Roaring Brook Nature Center, and a Grade 6 "Move Up Day" visit to Northwestern Middle School. Grade 6 promotion is scheduled for June 16 at 5:30 p.m. at Botelle School.
Board Chair John DeShazo said superintendents and board chairs from the four Regional #7 feeder towns discussed the possibility of a Regional Director of Curriculum for 2027–28; the board agreed to hold further meetings to develop details.
The board entered executive session at 7:55 p.m. to discuss the superintendent’s performance evaluation and negotiations, and exited at 8:37 p.m. Jeremy Withnell moved to approve an agreement with the Custodial Employees Local 1303‑322 (AFSCME) covering July 1, 2026–June 30, 2029; the motion was recorded in the minutes but the vote outcome is not specified in the published minutes. The board adjourned at 8:39 p.m.
The minutes were recorded by Kathy Lippincott and are listed as subject to approval at the next meeting.
