Board hears Next Generation Accountability results; first readings held for three policy updates

Superintendent Melony Brady-Shanley reviewed Connecticut's Next Generation School Accountability results for North Canaan Elementary School at the board's Dec. 10 meeting, highlighting a reduction in chronic absenteeism across student subgroups and noting that overall proficiency remains high "while we do see some drops," according to the minutes.
At the same time, the board conducted a first reading of three district policies: Policy 3542.43 (Food Service Charging Policy), Policy 5131.81 (Cellular Phones/Electronic Communication Devices), and Policy 6148 (FAFSA Completion Program). Superintendent Brady-Shanley explained revisions from previous policy versions and the board indicated no requests for changes; the policies are scheduled for a vote at the January board meeting.
Assistant Superintendent Jeanine Rose reported that interviews for Collaborative Team Lead positions are nearly complete and that Region One has completed and been awarded Title grant applications for district schools. Principal Beth Johnson summarized recent school activities, including the Ready to Grow Bookmobile distribution for Pre-K–2 students, community placemat projects, and a second-grade "Thankful for Veterans" assembly on Nov. 26 that honored 21 veterans.
The reports combined student-performance context with near-term administrative steps for staffing, grants and policy adoption, with final policy action deferred to the January meeting.
