Oxford council selects Smith Sanitation for new five-year garbage and recycling contract

The Oxford City Council voted March 11 to move forward with Smith Sanitation for the city’s garbage and recycling services after reviewing three bids from Smith Sanitation, Cox Sanitation and ABC.
Council members noted concerns with Cox Sanitation, specifically that Cox has not previously operated a cart-based collection system. The council also discussed sticker pricing options raised by ABC; ABC indicated it would sell stickers at a wholesale price of $2.70 (retail $3.00) through convenience stores. Smith told the council it could provide service at $21.50 per resident per month under a five-year contract.
Council members said continuity and local experience were factors in the selection. "We have had contractors who have worked with our town before," a council member said during the selection discussion. The motion to approve the contract language Smith would provide was moved by Cooling and seconded by Walters; the council recorded the decision as carried with all ayes.
City Clerk Taylor Tvedte was instructed to contact the city attorney about the mechanics of raising rates for residents if necessary to reflect the new contract. The council did not set a final resident rate during the meeting, and any rate changes will require further review and, if needed, formal action.
The contract terms reviewed at the meeting included the $21.50/month offer from Smith and the five-year length; the council did not provide additional detail about start dates, transition logistics or contingencies in the meeting record. Those implementation details will be handled between city staff, the city attorney and the vendor.
