Chief Batts opened the meeting's ceremonial items by swearing in two new firefighters. Michael Ellis took the oath after completing the Northside Fire Academy in December and while serving in the Navy Reserve; Garrett Morton, a current academy recruit, was also sworn in.
Ellis thanked the mayor, the chiefs and his family for the opportunity and said he would "do everything I can to support the community." The council and audience applauded both recruits.
Following photographs and brief remarks, the council recessed until the fall of the gavel and then continued with the regular agenda.
