Superintendent: state approved Phase 1 planning funds; ROTC proposal and bus-route outreach underway

Superintendent Dr. Antonio Leighton reported June 24 that the Public School Capital Outlay Council (PSCOC) approved Phase 1 planning and assessment for the district's general-obligation bond project. He quoted two figures that reflect the district/state shares for the approved planning assessment: $165,925 and $91,575.
Dr. Leighton told the board that the bond implementation and oversight committee prioritized intercom and fire-panel upgrades for campuses as an initial safety investment; the district's maintenance supervisor has begun RFP planning and the oversight committee will reconvene in mid-July to review priorities and vendor selection.
On program development, Dr. Leighton summarized a June 8 meeting with an Air Force ROTC official (Tammy R. Perry) to explore a possible ROTC unit at the high school. He said the Air Force unit will review the site and viability and, if approved, the district would bring curriculum forward for board review and approval.
On student assignment and transportation, staff described home visits and bilingual outreach to families in proposed route areas to gauge preferences and concerns for potential re-routing and school-zoning adjustments for the 2026–27 year; staff will return maps and a formal proposal for board consideration after completing outreach.
Board members asked clarifying questions about meeting dates, community feedback and possible recruitment across county lines. Dr. Leighton said legal counsel will be consulted about zoning boundaries and that more detailed maps will be provided to the board via email.
