Taos schools report $5.394M projected cash balance; board approves year-end budget adjustments

Taos Municipal Schools finance director Dr. Reneer Martins presented the district's consolidated financial reports for April and May 2026 and said the district expects to carry approximately $5.394 million in cash into the next fiscal year, a level he described as roughly two months of operating cash.
"The important number is the 5.394 million in balance," Dr. Martins said while showing the consolidated B report. He added that encumbrances for payroll are included in the calculation and that the district has requested $2 million in reimbursements from the Public Education Department (PED) for previously spent items.
The board also reviewed and approved a set of budget adjustment requests (BARs) needed at year end to move flow-through funds and match expenditures to the correct function codes so PED will process reimbursements. Board members asked for clarification about a line labeled 'CTE pilot' (career-technical education pilot). Superintendent Dr. Leighton said the item likely funds a pilot CTE program—presenters mentioned an aviation/airplane-building component—and agreed to provide a formal clarification and a presentation in July or August.
Motions to accept the April–May financial reports and to approve the BARs passed on recorded votes of members present. The board instructed staff to supply any requested detail on the CTE pilot and to return with further information at a subsequent meeting.
