The owners of 213 South Pine told the York City Historical Architectural Review Board they plan to remove existing siding on the front facade to return the building to its original brick appearance.
"The goal is is to go back to the original brick," the applicant said, explaining they would replace bay/oriel window siding with wood-grain vinyl only if the underlying materials proved too deteriorated to restore.
Board members praised the applicant’s intent to remove inappropriate vinyl and to reveal historic fabric, but they emphasized preference for restoration of wood features or use of higher-grade composite materials (for example, Azek or cementitious/fiber-cement shingles) over vinyl. A committee member asked for a non-wood-grain finish if vinyl is necessary: "I think if we... stipulate we'd prefer the non-wood grain look." The board approved the application with the condition that applicants explore composite alternatives and that masonry repairs, if needed, use high-lime mortar rather than modern Portland mixes.
The board noted that many neighboring houses still have vinyl applied without permits; members encouraged careful testing of underlying materials before replacement. The approval included staff direction to help the applicant with material samples and technique recommendations.
