Jeran said the committee selected the text because it can prepare students for later study of Romeo and Juliet and is accessible given its compact format.
Board members questioned whether the book’s violent themes were presented in a way appropriate for students. A committee member said the curriculum review considered those concerns and concluded the violence is not graphic and that the text supports instructional goals. The motion to adopt was moved and seconded; the board then approved adoption by unanimous vote.
The district will add Long Way Down to 9th‑grade course materials and notify teachers; the curriculum office will provide the finalized edition and publisher information to staff.
