Policy Subcommittee elects Mary Ella Luft chair, advances 3000-series policies to full board

The Westbrook Board of Education Policy Subcommittee elected Mary Ella Luft chair and advanced several 3000-series policy updates to the full board during its Jan. 23, 2026 meeting at the superintendent’s office.
Kim Walker, a board member, moved to nominate Mary Ella Luft as chair; the motion carried unanimously. The subcommittee approved the minutes of Nov. 12, 2025 on a motion by Walker and a second from Elizabeth Fernandes.
The committee reviewed the 3000-series policies and recorded specific next steps. Policy 3542.31 (2016) was accepted in updated form (adopting the CABE model) and will be forwarded to the Feb. 10, 2026 Board of Education meeting for a first reading. Policy 3542.34 (2016) was marked for revision: the subcommittee directed deletion of three paragraphs (to be highlighted for the board) and instructed staff to update CABE legal references. Policy 3542.43 (2022) and Policy 3543.311 (2023) were marked "reviewed" on Jan. 23 and added to the Feb. 10 BOE agenda as FYI items. Policy 3543.11 (2008) was recommended for sunset and will be moved to the Feb. 10 meeting for first reading. Policy 3543.31 (2023) was placed for adoption as a CABE policy and also forwarded for first reading at the Feb. 10 meeting.
The subcommittee set its next policy-review committee meeting date and agenda items. The policies to be reviewed at the Feb. 27, 2026 committee meeting were listed as Policy 3514 (2008), 3516 (2008), 3516.11 (2008), 3517 (2008), 3524.2 (2010), 3533 (2008), 3541 (2018), and 3542.45 (2010).
The meeting record shows routine, unanimous procedural votes: the chair selection and minutes approval passed without recorded dissent. The committee adjourned at 11:13 a.m.; the full Board of Education will receive the forwarded items at its Feb. 10 monthly meeting.
