Bedford County’s emergency medical services staff reported the county was awarded a federal grant of about $305,000 to purchase a new ambulance and will proceed with the required paperwork.
"We got approved for a federal grant for a new ambulance of about three hundred five thousand dollars," the EMS representative (Ted) said, noting the funding appeared to be 100% and that procurement and delivery could take up to 36 months. Committee members asked whether the county could specify a preferred vehicle manufacturer and were told staff expects to be able to acquire a unit similar to the county’s existing fleet but will await state and CMS guidance in upcoming calls.
The EMS representative also said the department will begin an EMT and advanced EMT class in the coming weeks and has already received more applicants than available seats.
Next steps: staff will complete grant paperwork, follow state procurement guidance and report back to the committee on timelines and specifications when available.
