Berlin Board elects officers, approves fiscal signers and ratifies food-service contracts

The Berlin Board of Education completed routine governance business and several formal votes during its Nov. 25 meeting.
Elections and officer appointments: The board reconvened its regular business at 7:28 p.m. and elected Julia Dennis as board president; the chair announced a unanimous tally of eight votes from members present. The board then elected a secretary by ballot: Melissa received four votes, Jen Jurgens three and Jessica one; Melissa was declared secretary.
Policy, schedule and signatories: The board approved the annual schedule of regular meetings in accordance with board policy 9085. It also approved a multi-part fiscal motion designating signers for the general fund, the Berlin High School enterprise fund, district activity funds, the cafeteria fund and BOE programs, naming individuals (for example Kevin Delany and the board president) as authorized signers.
State-approved evaluation plan: Curriculum directors Lori and Carl Watson described four edits requested by the state and noted that the Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) has approved the district's 2024–25 Leader and Educator Evaluation and Support Plan. The board voted to adopt the plan as presented.
Personnel and retirements: The board accepted the retirement of Michael Demma, head custodian at Hubard School, effective March 28, 2025, and accepted the retirement of Barbara Grady (grade 4 teacher) effective June 30, 2025; both motions carried.
Executive session and contracts: After an executive session that began at 7:55 p.m. and concluded at 8:28 p.m., the board voted to adopt the food service contract and the cook manager contract as presented; both motions carried by recorded voice votes reported as 8–0 in favor.
