Westbrook HMC approves $1,250 to replace missing Channel Marker #6; harbormaster reports full mooring renewals

At its Jan. 27 meeting the Westbrook Harbor Management Commission approved payment for replacement of Channel Marker #6 and heard routine operational updates from Harbormaster Charlie McSorley.
A proposal from Sound Side Construction, LLC dated Jan. 16, 2026, to provide and install a new red nun buoy replacing the missing Marker #6 (including chain, shackles, swivel and mooring) for $1,250 was presented. A motion to pay Sound Side Construction $1,250 passed unanimously (moved by D. Artkop; seconded by R. Stevenson).
Harbormaster Charlie McSorley reported the mooring renewal season has begun: 15 applications have been received for beach moorings and 10 Patchogue River moorings have been renewed so far; McSorley said the river moorings will be full again this year. He also reported that Channel Marker #6 and the Rocks buoy from the west side of Menunketesuck Island are missing; No Wake buoys were accounted for. Vice Chairman Evan Cusson suggested creating a spreadsheet to track buoys and markers.
Cusson also noted the Singing Bridge construction will narrow the navigation channel to 14 feet during construction and will add a sidewalk and bus stop near Atlantic Outboard, a change the commission said it will monitor for navigation safety.
The commission did not set additional timelines for marker replacement beyond authorizing the payment to Sound Side Construction.
