Residents press Cleves council on park field maintenance; council advances $5,000 to parks pending grant reimbursement

Residents and local coaches urged the Village of Cleves to improve maintenance of Cle Community Park’s athletic fields after repeated unplayable conditions and canceled practices. Joshua Cox, a resident and coach, described three weeks of substandard field upkeep and said the village’s failure to prioritize field readiness let youth teams down.

Council members acknowledged limited maintenance staff and competing priorities after recent flooding that requires cleanup before fields can be made safe. Officials said flood cleanup can be time-consuming and resource-intensive and that seasonal staffing constraints make timely field restoration difficult. The parks committee discussed possible short-term fixes including targeted staffing, policy changes, and physical barriers to prevent vehicle traffic through the fields.

Separately, the council introduced and then adopted Resolution 11 (2026), authorizing an advance of $5,000 from the general fund to the parks fund to cover upfront costs for a parks project that will be reimbursed after receipt of an $8,600 grant. Council said the parks fund will repay the general fund when the reimbursement arrives. The motion to adopt passed on roll call with members present voting in favor.
