Superintendent Mr. Iapelli told the Board of Education for the Borough of Oradell that the district’s chronic absenteeism rate has increased and that staff will present data and a corrective-action plan at the board’s second July meeting.
“This year...our chronic absenteeism rate has increased,” Superintendent Mr. Iapelli said, adding that “one specific subgroup does need a corrective action plan.” He opened by reviewing end-of-year events, praised staff planning after a full-school evacuation drill and outlined the district’s summer programs and facility uses.
The board handled its consent and committee items with routine votes. The buildings-and-grounds committee reviewed planned work—replacing basketball hoops, updating the front sign, considering native plantings to reduce irrigation needs, repainting playground structures, camera installation and HVAC assessments for the media-center wing—and brought forward B1, a building-use request. “Looks like the dance studio wants to use the building in December,” Mr. Del Greco said; the board approved the request on a roll-call vote.
Finance and technology items D1–D17 and administrative items A1–A5 were presented and approved as a group on roll call. The personnel committee presented F1 (noted as resignations, terminations and new hires including school nurse and substitute staff necessary for operations), and the board approved those personnel items.
Votes at a glance: - Motion to approve the May 20 minutes: approved (roll call: Del Greco—yes; Downey—abstain; Genchi—yes; Moran—yes; Norian—yes; Nutland—yes; Walker—yes; Nichols—yes). - Approval of A1–A5 (administrative consent items): approved (roll call recorded in meeting). - Building use B1 (dance studio in December): approved (roll call recorded in meeting). - Finance/technology D1–D17: approved (roll call recorded in meeting). - Personnel F1 (resignations/appointments including nurse and substitutes): approved (roll call recorded in meeting). - Motion to enter closed session for the superintendent evaluation: approved; chair stated no action would follow the closed session.
Board members also offered brief commendations for sixth-grade commencement and the district’s emergency-drill coordination with local agencies. The superintendent’s detailed school performance report, including subgroup attendance data and the proposed corrective action, was postponed until the board’s second July meeting so staff could finalize recommended next steps.
The board scheduled a retreat and moved into closed session for the superintendent evaluation by roll call; the public portion of the meeting concluded with administrative housekeeping and parade logistics.
