Pleasantville council approves $15,760.34 in LOST grants amid two dissenting votes

The Pleasantville City Council voted July 16 to award Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) grants totaling $15,760.34 to local organizations and initiatives.
The awarded grants included Pleasantville Senior Center ($3,000), Marion County Special Olympics ($600), Friends of Webb Shadle Library ($2,500), Pleasantville Chamber of Commerce ($1,000), Pleasantville Youth Initiative ($3,000), American Legion Post 108 ($660.34), IMPACT ($1,500), Gladys Black Memorial Tower ($500), Pleasantville Betterment ($2,500) and HIRTA ($500).
Councilmember Aaron Hurt objected to awarding Pleasantville Betterment Organization $2,500, arguing that the group's application suggested funds would be used to buy items that benefit the city directly. "It doesn’t make sense to me for the City to award them grant money to buy for the City," Hurt said. Kyle Patterson moved and Rachel Lopez seconded the motion to approve the grants. The roll call recorded Van Ness, Lopez and Patterson voting aye and Hurt and Koehn voting nay; the motion carried by majority.
No additional conditions or follow-up reporting requirements were recorded on the grant awards during the meeting.
The approved grants will be funded from the LOST fund as recorded in the meeting minutes.
