Sherman selectmen send $7.93 million town budget to April 18 Town Meeting; May 2 referendum set

Lowe announced the Board's decision to send the proposed FY 2026-27 Town budget of $7,934,192 and the Board of Education budget of $10,095,148 to the Annual Town Budget Meeting on April 18, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. at Charter Hall, and to set a referendum on May 2, 2026 between 10:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. The motion was moved by D. Lowe, seconded by Selectman B. Ostrosky and approved unanimously by the three-member Board.
The board held a brief discussion before the vote about scheduling a second Town Meeting to present additional items, including possible Playhouse upgrades and proposed changes to Building Department fees. First Selectman D. Lowe said those items would be scheduled for public discussion at a future meeting or Town Meeting to allow voters time to review details.
Business Administrator L. LaVia provided a nine-month snapshot of FY2025-26 spending as context for the FY2026-27 proposal, noting that parks and recreation supplies and part-time wages are tracking higher than expected and may require additional funding consideration in the next fiscal year. No changes to the budget numbers were made at the March 26 meeting.
The next procedural step is the Town Meeting on April 18, where the budgets will be presented to voters and questions may be raised; the budget will then go to the referendum on May 2. The Board did not change levy estimates at the meeting; further financial detail and any proposed fee changes are expected to be shared with voters before the Town Meeting.
