Newfield reports foundations, in-wall utilities and upcoming pours at Sherman School; team watching material deliveries

Benjamin Chasse, assistant project manager for Newfield Construction, told the School Building Committee that work on the west addition — including classrooms, music and art rooms — has focused on finalizing foundations and footings and on installing under-slab electrical and plumbing, which have been inspected and backfilled. He said concrete pours were expected by the end of the week, weather permitting.
Chasse reported continued brace-frame steel work in the east wing, concrete infills for old staircases and data/IT closets, interior wall framing and masonry in corridors, and ongoing in-wall rough for electrical, plumbing, and overhead fire protection. On the lower level, steel replacement and column reinforcing details are being finalized; the kitchen slab was scheduled for the end of this week or the beginning of next week. Building envelope and roof work is planned to start soon.
Chasse said project staff are collecting actual material delivery dates and will factor those into the construction schedule to assess any potential impact on the forecasted school start date. Committee member Christian Dacunha thanked Newfield for addressing a resident zoning complaint; Newfield found no violation but voluntarily darkened interior lighting to reduce light pollution.
John Flis (Newfield project executive) told the committee there will be a beam-signing ceremony to mark raising the final beam between April 7 and April 10; members suggested combining the ceremony with a committee tour in early April.
