Town engineers outline Complete Streets update, sidewalk bids and local traffic proposals

Town engineers Conor Clifford and Amanda Lima presented an update on the Complete Streets policy to the Yarmouth Commission on Disabilities on Jan. 7, reporting regional adoption and several potential local projects.
Clifford, a civil engineer for the Town of Yarmouth, said 11 towns in Barnstable County have adopted the Complete Streets policy; nine towns are in Phase 2 of implementation and four have begun construction. The engineers told the commission there are current bids for sidewalk construction on Buck Island and that the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is supporting the regional effort.
The presenters reviewed two local roadway proposals discussed for Yarmouth: installing a traffic signal at the Buck Island and Town Brook Road intersection, and replacing the existing traffic signal on East Main Street with a roundabout. Commissioners raised additional concerns about roadways in town and sought clarification on priorities and next steps for the projects discussed.
Because the commission did not have a quorum, members took no formal votes on the proposals during the meeting. Engineers and commissioners discussed potential follow-up steps but did not direct staff to take any binding action at this session.
The Complete Streets presentation provided a status update on regional adoption and early construction activity; town staff will likely return with more detailed project proposals, cost estimates and any formal recommendations once work and bids advance.
