The Sierra Vista City Council approved Resolution 2026-046 to renew an intergovernmental agreement among the city, Coochis County Sheriff's Office, and Coochis College for a regional police academy.
The police chief described the academy’s facilities (dormitories, indoor firing range, driving track) and said the program has been a successful local training environment. Under the renewed IGA, the city provides a full-time recruit training officer and receives reimbursement for overtime costs up to $13,570 per 20-week academy; the department runs two 20-week academies per year. Recruits enrolled in the academy earn 30 college credit hours when they graduate.
Council members asked operational questions including whether the city pays tuition, housing and stipends for recruits; the chief said recruits are on the city payroll and the city covers uniform allowances and, depending on circumstances, tuition for additional recruits. Council approved the IGA renewal.
