The police chief asked council to renew an intergovernmental agreement with Cochise County and Cochise College to continue support for the regional police academy. He said the partnership provides a full-time recruit training officer assigned to the academy, which results in a reimbursement of $13,570 in overtime reimbursement per 20-week session and meal coverage for that instructor.
The city also provides training facilities (defensive tactics room) and instructors who contribute coursework and skill training. Chief Heiser said the academy offers 30 college credit hours to recruits and that the tuition for up to three recruits from the city is waived as part of the contribution.
Council asked no substantive questions and the chief noted the academy has been the city’s exclusive academy choice for local recruits; the next class runs in July with two recruits already hired and a possible third.
