The Falmouth Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee on Jan. 7 agreed to prioritize a minimum of six events to mark the Shining Sea Bikeway’s 50th anniversary in 2026, starting with a Friends of Falmouth Bikeways celebration at the end of April.
Chair Katherine Jansen summarized a December brainstorming process with the committee and the Friends of Falmouth Bikeways and described a prioritization and leadership assignment exercise to finalize the schedule and responsible volunteers. The committee settled on a sequence that could run through year‑end.
Planned activities include a family and adult scavenger hunt series on or adjacent to the bikeway, a commemorative 50‑mile challenge with a prize, and scheduled monthly walks and rides designed to be accessible for adults and children. Members proposed inviting Selectboard members, town administration and DPW staff to serve as honorary leaders for some events. Frieder Klein urged organizers to choose sustainable, practical giveaway items — for example, bells for cyclists or small flashlights for pedestrians — rather than plastic or single‑use items.
The committee asked volunteers to define the scope, timing and leadership for each event and to report back by the February meeting.
