The Town of Dennis Waterways Commission heard updates on several infrastructure projects, including the phased replacement of the Bass River bridge, the Route 28 realignment in West Dennis and proposed West Side harbor improvements.
Chair (speaker 2) said the Bass River bridge will be rebuilt in halves so one side remains open while the other is worked on, with fewer pilings in the new design, and estimated the overall effort could span about three years. “They’re gonna do half the bridge at a time,” the chair said, adding work will restrict navigation while each half is under construction.
A staff member (speaker 4) noted that the West Dennis Route 28 realignment and main-street reconstruction are being coordinated with the bridge project and with similar work in nearby Yarmouth, and cautioned residents to avoid the areas during construction.
Commissioners discussed cost estimates and funding: a member cited a current estimate of $6,000,000 for certain West Side improvements (noted as down by $2,000,000 from an earlier figure) and said the project is awaiting state grant awards and other funding. The chair said some broader, long-range plans previously discussed have much larger price tags and multi-decade time horizons but reiterated that short-term progress depends on grant notifications and town support.
Members agreed to track grant timelines and bring project updates to the March meeting. No formal votes on projects were taken at this session.
