Carbon County commissioners approve speed study, fire warden job change and routine consent items

The Carbon County Board of Commissioners on March 17 approved a formal speed study for Highway 421, adopted changes to the County Fire Warden job description that reduce weekly hours to 30, and passed routine consent items including a Road and Bridge purchase request and a scanner maintenance agreement.
The board voted to authorize a speed study for Highway 421 from Lone Tree Road to the intersection of Highway 212 after Sheriff Josh McQuillan and DES Director Cyrina Allen highlighted multiple accidents at the road’s sudden end, a nearby school bus stop, a cemetery and active construction. Bill Bullock moved to approve the speed study; Scott Miller seconded and the motion carried.
Commissioners also voted to approve the County’s updated job description for the Fire Warden and Rural Fire Chief along with a Voluntary Job Description Change and Hours Reduction Agreement. Fire Warden Tom Kohley described differences between the Rural Fire Chief and Fire Warden roles; the board approved changing the position’s hours to 30 per week (Monday–Thursday, 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m., including an hour lunch). Miller moved to approve the change; Blain seconded and the motion carried. The board noted that the change could affect chains of command and said further discussion on structural implications is needed.
On the consent agenda the commissioners approved a purchase request for Road and Bridge totaling $16,392.40 and accepted the Commissioners’ Proceedings for Feb. 26, 2026. The board separately approved a Scanner Maintenance Agreement between the Clerk & Recorder and Selbys. Bill Bullock moved on the consent items and Miller seconded; motions carried.
