A staff member who briefed the board said the district’s academic staff are already thinking about driving recycling responsibility into high school, middle and elementary classes, and that the facilities director — who manages maintenance and trash contracts — expressed particular interest in composting. "The single most thing he is interested in is composting," the staff member said.
Board members noted that the district operates many sites through contractors: the transcript records school cafeterias run by two contractors, trash and recycling managed by two contractors, and maintenance by a separate contractor. To understand what contractors can and cannot implement, the board said it will request access to the relevant contracts via FOIA.
Board members and staff also discussed logistics and next steps: the academic side intends to prepare a small budget request (board members repeatedly cited figures such as "$5k or $10k" as possible starting points), and the facilities staff will engage contractors to identify feasible collection systems, bin configurations and cost implications. One board member recommended convening haulers so all providers use consistent recycling lists and standards before rolling out education in schools.
The board plans preparatory meetings of its members to align messages before returning to the school district in January. The meeting closed with the board agreeing to send invites and to coordinate a small initial group for next steps.
