Wellesley Select Board hears final fire station master plan recommending replacement of Station 1

WELLESLEY — The Select Board reviewed June 8 a final Fire Department master plan that finds Station 1 on Central Street — built about 100 years ago — no longer meets modern needs and recommends replacing it, renovating and expanding Station 2, and setting a response-time threshold that would trigger planning for a possible third station on the town’s east side, Chair Marjorie Freiman said.
The consultants, hired by the Fire Department and Context Architecture, recommended a Station 1 replacement at a site on the North 40 on Weston Road (across from Howe or Curve Streets) requiring roughly two acres; the report also described significant deficiencies at Station 2 headquarters on Route 9. The plan cited inadequate living, health and safety, and equipment facilities at both stations.
Freiman said sirens would be activated only when necessary for traffic control on engine departures and that the Board’s first review had taken place the prior week. She said a public meeting on the fire station would be scheduled later in the month to solicit community input.
Next steps: The Board will hold a public meeting on the master plan and continue work on locating and planning for a Station 1 replacement, with additional details and cost estimates to follow at future meetings.
