Wellesley wins $1 million state grant to add solar at two elementary schools

WELLESLEY — The Select Board learned June 8 that the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources’ Green Communities Division awarded the Town a $1,000,000 Climate Leader Communities Decarbonization Accelerator grant to support installation of solar photovoltaic systems at Hunnewell and Hardy Elementary Schools, Executive Director Meghan Jop said.
“DOER approved a $1,000,000 Climate Leader Communities Decarbonization Accelerator grant award to the Town of Wellesley,” Meghan Jop said during the meeting, and she thanked Sustainability staff and partners at Facilities Management and the Municipal Light Plant for their work on the application.
Chair Marjorie Freiman congratulated the team, noting the grant’s “substantial impact” on completing the school solar installations. The grant will fund design and installation of solar PV systems at both schools; specific project timelines and procurement steps were not specified at the meeting.
Jop also used the Executive Director’s report to remind residents of a town sustainability event scheduled for June 9 and to note that Morse’s Pond would be open for preseason use but without lifeguards until June 22; she said current lower-rate season passes would be available only through June 21.
Next steps: Town staff and the Municipal Light Plant will proceed with project planning and coordination; the Select Board did not take a separate vote on the grant during the June 8 meeting and no procurement or contract approvals were announced.
