The New Hartford Board of Education on June 2 approved Bylaw 9221, the district’s updated process for filling board member vacancies, after a second reading and review by legal counsel.
Board member Kirby Morante moved to adopt the bylaw and the Vacancy Appointment Decision Framework, and Jon Puz seconded; the motion passed unanimously. Superintendent Sousa told the board the language had been reviewed by the attorney and that the added framework provides a clear step-by-step guide for appointment decisions.
Board discussion emphasized clarity and adherence to current law; no further amendments were made at the meeting. The board indicated it will include an executive-session self-evaluation at the August regular meeting as part of ongoing governance work.
What’s next: the bylaw takes effect immediately as adopted and will guide any future vacancy appointment processes.
