At its June 2 meeting the New Hartford Board of Education approved seven line-item transfers totaling $261,000 to cover legal expenses, outplacement tuition shifts, purchased services and emergency repairs at Ann Antolini, Bakerville Consolidated and New Hartford Elementary schools.
Superintendent Jeffrey Sousa presented the transfers itemizing $40,000 from tuition to legal, $27,000 from medical to legal, $28,000 from medical to purchased services (Silver Petrucelli + Associates), $74,000 from medical to emergency repairs at Ann Antolini, $62,000 from medical to emergency repairs at Bakerville Consolidated, $18,000 from medical to emergency repairs at New Hartford Elementary and $12,000 from medical to equipment for security and classroom needs. Erik Perotti moved to approve the transfers and Frank Rodenberg seconded; the motion passed unanimously.
Sousa confirmed the district’s legal fees exceeded $100,000 this fiscal year and the transfers were intended to cover outstanding legal invoices and anticipated costs through May and June. The board discussed specific repair needs that the transfers will fund, including electronic door installations, alarm systems, roof and gutter work, and chlorination system support at Bakerville.
Chair Timothy Klepps also summarized a state Education Cost Sharing (ECS) supplemental allocation passed as part of the May 2 budget changes: New Hartford’s one-time distribution is $173,240 for education and $22,147 for municipal purposes. Klepps said the additional funds are to be held in a separate account for audit purposes and that the town’s Board of Finance and Selectmen had discussed allocation; Superintendent Sousa will prepare a priority list for expending available ARPA funds as an additional maintenance resource.
The transfers and grant update were presented as administrative actions; no further policy votes were taken on the allocation of the ECS supplemental dollars at the meeting.
What’s next: staff will implement the approved transfers and include these changes in the district’s financial reporting; the board awaits Board of Finance minutes to confirm municipal application of the ECS supplemental funding.
