Aurelia City Council approves consent agenda, several expenditures and keeps old fire station; fireworks ordinance tabled

The Aurelia City Council on June 23 approved its consent agenda and several expenditures, authorized a drug take-back box with security cameras at City Hall, and voted to retain the old fire station, while tabling the first reading of a fireworks ordinance.
Mayor Dennis Weathers called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. and a roll call showed Council Members Bruce, Nelson, Redig and Fassler present; Council Member Johnson was absent. The council approved the consent agenda on a motion by Council Member Fassler, seconded by Council Member Redig; the roll-call vote recorded ayes from Redig, Nelson, Bruce and Fassler and the motion carried.
Clerk Stephanie McSparran presented bills payable and financial reports. The packet listed multiple vendor payments and line items (including a $92,396.00 test well billed by Sargent Drilling and a $28,690.38 State Revolving Fund loan payment for a water project), with the bills section totaling $166,575.60. May revenues were reported at $159,553.00 and May disbursements at $102,995.86.
On separate motions the council took several actions: Council Member Redig moved, and Council Member Nelson seconded, approval of a drug take-back box on the south side of City Hall with security cameras; all members present voted “aye” and the motion carried. The council approved Haselhoff pay request #1 in the amount of $8,122.50 on a motion by Council Member Redig and second by Council Member Bruce, with all members present voting “aye.” Council Member Bruce moved, seconded by Council Member Redig, to purchase two pickleball nets not to exceed $1,500.00; that motion also passed unanimously among members present.
The council discussed properties at 401 and 409 Myrtle but took no formal action on them. The first reading of Ordinance #713, described as an amendment to Aurelia’s code provisions on fireworks, was tabled and will return for further consideration at a later meeting.
After debate about the future of the old fire station, Council Member Bruce moved that the city keep the building and not sell it; Council Member Fassler seconded, and all members present voted “aye.” A landfill report was provided and the meeting adjourned at 7:55 p.m.
The council packet lists attendees including City Clerk Stephanie McSparran and staff members reported present. No formal public hearing was recorded on the agenda items listed in the minutes.
