Commission approves Veterans Parkway geotechnical study, bridge planning payment; paving updates reported

The St. Clair County Commission approved a Terracon proposal to perform geotechnical engineering on a new portion of Veterans Parkway to address a reported riding problem. The proposal was described at the meeting as $20,000; county crews will provide traffic control where possible to reduce the cost.
Separately, the commission approved payment to Lauderdale County to reimburse engineering services performed on the county’s behalf for a multi-jurisdictional bridge investment planning grant. The planning grant was approved and the construction application is due June 28; if the construction award is successful the county expects to conduct a hydroblasting project on one of the long bridges on Wolf Creek Road South.
Public-works staff also reported paving progress: crews completed work in Camp Wetatow and moved to Journey’s End, Show Creek Valley Road and Sagebrush; base crews completed access-path work tied to the Wolf Creek debris project with previously authorized overtime.
Why it matters: The geotechnical study and bridge planning are steps intended to identify and fix roadway and bridge safety/structural issues and to position the county for construction funding. The Terracon study and the bridge-planning reimbursements set engineering work in motion that would support future construction projects.
Next steps: Staff will proceed with the Terracon scope, provide traffic control where feasible to reduce cost, and monitor the construction-grant application due June 28.
