Police Chief David Pernice told the Union City Borough Council on Aug. 13 that the department fielded 269 calls between June 1 and Aug. 13, averaging about 3.63 calls per day, and that some incidents required officers to spend entire shifts on single calls. Pernice listed recent responses that included vehicle pursuits, protection‑from‑abuse orders, warrants, domestic incidents, drug activity and homelessness calls. He said the department recently handled a domestic call that extended from about 8:50 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.
Pernice said he and Officer Shelly attended an Alert Active Shooter training on July 24–25 hosted by Millcreek Police Department and described it as beneficial. He also said the department applied to the UC Community Foundation for funding and received awards for four tasers and for security cameras to expand coverage on North Main Street.
The council voted earlier in the meeting to hire a part‑time officer from the certified civil service list; Borough Manager Cindy Wells told council the budget had allowed at least $33,560 for wages and benefits.
