Supporters said local operation would give the county better control over service levels, reduce the risk of being at the mercy of a single contractor in future renewals and potentially improve responsiveness. Commissioners acknowledged upfront startup costs are likely higher but said the county's solid-waste/refuse fee structure could absorb initial expenses.
A public commenter, Jonathan Jameson, told the board he supported the decision and thanked commissioners for the move. Commissioners approved the motion to pursue county-run green boxes; staff will return with a refined plan, budget estimates and timeline for implementation prior to contract expiration.
