Robins council votes 4-1 to keep sidewalk snow-removal responsibility with property owners

The City Council voted March 2 to continue enforcement of Chapter 71 of the municipal code, which places the responsibility for sidewalk snow removal on property owners. The motion, made by Councilor Bruce Vander Sanden and seconded by Councilor Leigh Cook, passed 4-1; Councilor Leslie Hoyt voted no.
Mayor Chuck Hinz noted the City may not yet have enough information to expand municipal sidewalk snow removal services. Councilor Cary Smith suggested a short-term continuation of the current policy while staff evaluates costs and explores a volunteer "Snow Buddy" program modeled after a Cedar Rapids example, which would pair volunteers with residents who need assistance clearing sidewalks.
The Council directed staff to research program models and cost estimates; staff will return to the Council with findings before any policy change.
