Sabula council renews insurance policies, approves auditor and schedules road repair work session

The Sabula City Council on May 26 approved changes to its insurance coverage and took steps on auditing and road repair planning.
Councilmember Scott Hibbard moved to raise the deductible on the city’s ICAP policy and, after a second from Erica Shoemaker, the council voted unanimously to adopt the higher deductible and approve the FY26/27 renewal with the Iowa Communities Assurance Pool. Councilmembers also approved renewal of the employee insurance plan with Wellmark and requested staff evaluate premium costs ahead of future renewals.
For financial oversight, the council unanimously approved O’Connor Brooks to conduct the city’s annual examination for FY25/26 on a motion from Erica Shoemaker and second from Jeremy Diercks.
On public works, members discussed a chip-seal bid from LL Pelling and agreed to prioritize filling potholes and addressing open gravel areas around town. The council directed staff to schedule a work session to refine street repair plans and bids.
These administrative approvals move forward the city’s risk-management and fiscal-review calendar; the council asked staff to return with cost evaluations and ordinance language where applicable.
