Redevelopment board raises workforce grant pool, approves Maryville scope change

The Hobart Redevelopment Commission on March 16 voted to increase the commission’s 2027 education and workforce training grant pool from $30,000 to $50,000 and approved a scope change to a Maryville High School construction-trades grant.

Chair (speaker 1) moved to approve the funding increase and the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. Miguel (speaker 2) then presented an update and introduced a letter from Terrell Taylor, construction trades instructor at Maryville High School, describing a revision to the project.

In his letter (read at the meeting), Terrell Taylor said the program would shift from building eight outdoor food pantry boxes to designing and constructing eight indoor multipurpose distribution cabinets — one for each Maryville community school — to store and distribute food, clothing and personal-hygiene items. "This revised approach provides several important benefits," the letter states, adding that indoor placement protects donated goods from winter weather and vandalism while allowing school staff to monitor inventory.

Miguel (speaker 2) told the board the revised plan addresses liability and spoilage concerns and strengthens the program’s service-learning value by giving students hands-on carpentry and material-management experience. Presenter (speaker 6), who read the letter, said staff confirmed the revised approach remains within the originally approved budget.

The board moved and unanimously approved the scope revision on the record. No formal changes to the 2027 disbursement schedule were reported at the meeting.

The commission did not identify dissenting votes. Staff noted the change would require no additional funding beyond the enlarged grant pool approved earlier in the meeting and that the project would continue to work with other Maryville School Corporation clubs and staff for implementation.
