Council moves forward on zoning change to clarify accessory dwelling unit size and enforcement

The Mount Vernon City Council on June 16 approved the first reading of Ordinance #6-16-2025C to amend Chapter 165 (Article 7, Section 710) of the municipal code concerning accessory buildings and accessory dwelling units (ADUs).
Staff said unintended language in the ADU section had severely limited overall unit size; the proposed changes update allowed square footage and clarify how enforcement will occur. Mayor Thomas M. Wieseler opened the public hearing with no public comment. Councilmember Rose moved to approve the first reading and Councilmember Andresen seconded; the reading passed on a roll-call vote with two members absent.
The amendment is intended to restore the intended ADU size allowances and provide a clearer enforcement mechanism in the zoning code. Because only the first reading passed, final adoption will require subsequent council action consistent with municipal ordinance procedures.
