Planning Board approves removal of backyard garage at 41 Old Post Road
Summary
The board waived Design Review Committee review and a public hearing and approved a Certificate of Appropriateness for demolition and removal of a backyard garage at 41 Old Post Road; applicants said a concrete pad remains and they currently do not plan to remove it.
At the May 4, 2026 meeting the Town of Red Hook Planning Board approved a Certificate of Appropriateness allowing the removal and hauling away of a backyard garage at 41 Old Post Road in Upper Red Hook.
Applicants Celia Rowlson-Hall and Mia Lidofsky joined the meeting via Zoom and said the garage sits in an awkward backyard location and that financial and landscaping constraints led them to choose removal over renovation. They told the board there is a concrete pad under the garage and that they currently have no plans to demolish the pad; they also said they may add a shed in the future.
Board members asked whether contractors had been consulted and whether alternatives to demolition were considered; the applicants said they had discussed options with contractors and determined removal was the preferred course. The board agreed to waive the Design Review Committee review and a public hearing for this item and then reviewed and approved the Certificate of Appropriateness. The motion to approve the CoA was made by Maxine Coleman, seconded by Nancy Low-Hogan, and passed unanimously.
The board did not require immediate removal of the concrete pad and recorded that applicants may return with future plans for the yard.
