The Mount Vernon City Council approved the first reading of Ordinance #6-16-2025B on June 16 to amend the US Highway 30 Master Plan and extend its north boundary beyond Business 30.
City staff said the amendment would apply the plan's design standards and guidelines to properties along the north side of Business 30, including Cherry Ridge, Hallmark Care Center, Casey's General Store, Round-About Repair Shop and the former Mount Vernon Motel site. Planning and Zoning recommended approval at its June 11 meeting.
Mayor Thomas M. Wieseler opened and closed the public hearing on the amendment with no public comment. Councilmember Engel moved to approve the first reading; Councilmember Andresen seconded. The reading passed on a roll-call vote, with Councilmembers Tuerler and West recorded absent.
The first reading advances the ordinance in the municipal code process; a subsequent reading or action will be needed for final adoption. Council materials note the purpose is to protect private investments along the corridor by applying consistent design standards.
