The Town of Red Hook Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee on April 28 reviewed draft vision statements and goals that will frame the town’s Comprehensive Plan for the next decade and called for broad public participation at a May 17 workshop.
The presentation outlined project goals including an open, transparent process; alignment with Smart Growth principles; and multiple engagement opportunities. The committee was shown outreach results so far — a public survey (noted as 70+ participants and 170+ responses), kitchen-table conversations and tabling at community events — and a timeline that leads to Planning Board review, SEQRA and county review, and Town Board adoption in late 2026 or early 2027.
The draft vision statements cover nine topic areas, the presentation said: land use and community character; farming and agricultural heritage; environment and open space; recreation and community vitality; housing and neighborhoods; transportation and connectivity; economic development and business; government and community services; and sustainability and resilience. Goals under the land-use heading emphasize encouraging development near hamlets and villages and protecting historic resources; housing goals call for more diverse, affordable options including duplexes and accessory dwelling units; transportation goals highlight sidewalks, bike lanes and multimodal connections, including collaborations with Bard College.
Committee members were asked to prioritize production of printed materials for outreach but were reminded that the draft does not need to be final before public input. The presentation stressed that Workshop #2 will focus on testing whether the draft visions and goals “get it right” and soliciting specific strategy ideas. Promotional plans for the May 17 open-house style workshop at Rose Hill Farm include print flyers, web/social postings and a townwide mailer.
The committee noted a scheduling issue for the next meeting (May 26) and discussed possibly cancelling or relocating the session. The presentation listed next steps: refine visions and goals after Workshop #2, prepare draft strategies, hold topic-based focus groups and committee meetings, and proceed to formal review stages.
The steering committee did not take formal votes on policy at the April 28 meeting; it moved to finalize outreach materials and solicit public feedback as the primary action item. The committee expects to incorporate Workshop #2 feedback into a revised draft before proceeding to Planning Board consideration.
