Malden Park Board hears updates on pavilion repairs, MLK court bidding, scout hut repurposing; tables $8,300 disc-golf proposal

Street/Parks Foreman Dewayne Rogers told the Malden Park Board on March 27 that the Frisco Park pavilion, previously considered for replacement with a carport, will instead be stabilized and bolted back down after inspection, and that repairs are nearly complete.
City Administrator Ivone Smith said the city plans to put street projects out to bid soon and recommended contracting the same company to do the MLK Park basketball court to reduce costs; Smith noted that professional striping for the court would likely be contracted separately.
Smith also reported that Telephone Switching is occupying the Golf Club House at the Airbase but will move into a new building soon; once vacated, the city intends to convert the Golf Club House into a Girl Scout Hut, demolish the existing Scout Hut, and construct a long pavilion at that location to host vendors for events.
The board reviewed a proposal from Travis Onken, who has installed 27 courses including in Dexter and New Madrid, to install a disc-golf course at a quoted price of $8,300. Members discussed alternatives — including refurbishing tennis courts for pickleball given that the city already owns the necessary equipment — and whether it would be cheaper to perform some work in-house. No decision was reached and the board tabled the proposal pending inclusion in the upcoming budget process.
Chair Ian Casto also announced upcoming community activities including an Easter egg hunt on April 12, a First State Community Bank volunteer day on April 22 for park cleanup and planting, and a free pet vaccination event at Frisco Park on June 7. The board adjourned at 6:48 p.m.
