County highway superintendent outlines FEMA ditch work and Platte River Road relinquishment talks with NDOT

Highway Superintendent Scott Huppert reported to the Dodge County Board that employees are cleaning corn stalks out of ditches under a FEMA grant, preparing snowplows and sand trucks, patching potholes and finishing snow fence installation.
Huppert said salt-shed issues have been fixed to prevent water intrusion into materials used for road treatment. He warned the board that residents may call about a dirt pile on County Road S between County Roads 2 and 3 that is affecting traffic flow.
Huppert said he and Chairman Missel attended the State Highway Commission meeting Dec. 6 and discussed the Platte River Road relinquishment. He told the board he will meet with NDOT Deputy Director of Operations Mick Syslo to review what Dodge County expects be completed before responsibility for the road is fully relinquished to NDOT. Huppert also reported he recently met with the Nebraska Association of County Officials and broadband providers to discuss expectations for installations. He said the association will draft an agreement counties can use that will not conflict with federal “Internet for All” rules and that the language is intended to protect counties from liability and damage to county infrastructure.
The board took no formal action on the highway report; Huppert described continuing operational preparations and planned coordination with state officials on Platte River Road relinquishment.
