Highway superintendent reports $520,000 in storm-related expenses; Board approves bids for road projects

Highway Superintendent Scott Huppert reported to the Dodge County Board of Supervisors on July 10 that crews are replacing culverts washed out during recent heavy rains and that storm-related expenses for culverts, gravel and ditch cleaning are estimated at about $520,000.
Huppert provided an update on several projects: Project 593 near Uehling is complete; Project 641 near Nickerson is underway and addresses recurring winter snow-drift problems; Project 651 at CR 11 north of CR T is a bridge replacement that has torn out the old structure but cannot set new culverts because of standing water. He said county crews are using three trucks and one excavator and are stockpiling cornstalks for future driveway base material.
The Board approved advertising for bids for County Road F in Scribner (Project C-27 (637)) and for the Old Nebraska Highway 275 Overlay Project C-27 (645), both with bid openings scheduled for July 31 in the Dodge County Highway Department. The Board also declared a 2003 Freightliner flatbed (VIN 1FVABTBV03DK81565) surplus; repair estimates for the engine were $12,000–$16,000 and the county will reuse the box and send the chassis to Nitz Auction.
Huppert said at a pre-conference for the Platte River Road reconstruction the State failed to include the county haul road agreement in the contract, creating concerns about dust on detour roads and responsibilities for drainage and culvert issues in county right-of-way; he plans to meet with the NDOT district representative and the Board asked him to draft a letter to the State.
