Dodge County approves agreement with Union Pacific and hears highway update on FEMA work and road projects

The Dodge County Board unanimously approved a reimbursement agreement with Union Pacific Railroad Company on Oct. 16, 2024 to cover preliminary engineering services for installing active warning devices at the Shoreline Drive at‑grade railroad crossing, and authorized county officials to sign the agreement.
Highway Superintendent Scott Huppert updated the Board on ongoing operations: crews are removing corn stalks from ditches through the winter if weather permits, adding eligible time to FEMA claims (he said there are 30 days remaining to add to the FEMA claim), replacing culverts including one cut by CenturyLink, and completing resurfacing work on Old Highway 275 and County Road F (the latter with Scribner contributing a share of costs). Huppert said he is working with the State on a safety grant that could reimburse the preliminary engineering services in the Union Pacific agreement and indicated he thinks the county has a good chance of receiving that grant because of the intersection’s traffic volumes.
The Board also discussed bridge inspection schedules and coordination of paving with traffic to nearby ball fields, and noted an outstanding gate installation issue on County Road 29 pending a response from Washington County. No formal dollar amounts for the Union Pacific preliminary engineering were recorded in the minutes; the action was recorded as unanimous.
