Ansonia Board certifies compliance with state nutrition standards, approves limited exceptions for after‑hours sales

Board member Beth LaBerge read the certification language aloud, citing the statute: “Pursuant to C.G.S. Section 10‑215f, the Ansonia Board of Education certifies that all food items offered for sale to students in the schools under its jurisdiction, and not exempted from the Connecticut Nutrition Standards published by the Connecticut State Department of Education, will comply with the Connecticut Nutrition Standards during the period of July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026.”
The Board also approved, by the required separate vote, a policy allowing the sale of food items that do not meet the Nutrition Standards and beverages not listed in C.G.S. Section 10‑221q provided three conditions are met: sales occur after the regular school day or on weekends, sales are at the location of the event, and items are not sold from a vending machine or school store. Examples cited in the read language included soccer games, school plays and interscholastic debates as qualifying events; routine practices or meetings do not qualify.
Both votes carried 5–0. Food Service Director Kevin Benham briefed the Board on Food Service Department needs and thanked members for the certification vote. The certification and the exception vote are required annual actions under state law and will guide food offerings and fundraising sales through the 2025–26 school year.
The Board’s actions will be implemented by the Food Service Department and monitored for compliance with the state standards.
