Fitchburg Council on Aging board asks for letter to protect senior center parking during Elm St. masonry project, hears budget update

The Fitchburg Council on Aging (COA) Board voted May 14 to request that a board member draft a letter urging protection of parking and sidewalks around the Senior Center while an Elm Street masonry project is completed, and it unanimously approved a slate of officers for the coming year.
The motion to ask Tom to prepare the letter was moved by Nancy and seconded by Jim and passed; Tom will bring the draft to the board’s June meeting for members to sign. The board also approved the officer slate naming Todd Goodwin as chair, Joe Byrne as vice chair and Deb Dion as secretary.
The board heard updates from Amanda, the COA director (transcript lists only her first name), who reported that a mobile shower unit is currently being tested behind the Legislative Building and that the Board of Health has provided no further official guidance. Amanda said the Elm Street masonry project is awaiting work by Silvio’s Masonry and Landscaping Inc.; once scaffolding is installed patrons may be directed to the Elm Street entrance and, if work proceeds on schedule, the project could be completed by June 30.
Board members urged residents to complete an online parking survey and noted paper parking letters available in the Senior Center hallway have been generating responses. Tom was thanked for his work on parking outreach.
On fiscal matters Amanda told the board that she presented a revised FY27 COA budget to the City Council Finance Committee on May 13, accompanied by Todd and Tom. The board said the budget is expected to go before the full City Council on May 20. The minutes note a pending state formula grant that, if enacted, would provide $16.00 per elder in the city; the grant must still be passed by the state.
Members were informed that several reappointments of board members remain pending mayoral approval; until that action is taken those members continue to serve. The meeting adjourned at 1:40 p.m. The minutes were later approved at the June 12, 2026 meeting and filed with the Fitchburg City Clerk. The next scheduled COA meeting is Thursday, June 11, 2026 at 1:00 p.m.
