Sharon Board approves first reading of tuition policy, sets new tuition rates and accepts tuition students

The Sharon Board of Education on May 12 approved a first reading of an addendum to Tuition Policy 5114 and set new tuition rates for out-of-district students, voting 4–1 on both measures.
The board approved Policy 5114 pending a potential edit to add a principal sign-off page after Nancy Hegy Martin requested that a sign-off be appended for the principal. The motion to approve the policy was made by N. Hegy Martin and seconded by Anne Vance; Plamen Petkov asked whether the policy language originated with the state and cast the sole dissenting vote. The board recorded four yes votes from Doug Cahill, Anne Vance, Philip O’Reilly and Nancy Hegy Martin.
Following the policy vote, the board set the annual tuition rate at $2,500 for a first child and $1,250 for a second child by motion of Philip O’Reilly, seconded by N. Hegy Martin; that motion passed 4–1 with Petkov opposed.
Board members also acted on multiple enrollment requests arising from written communications. The board unanimously accepted Sevilla Navarrete and Ellis Porter for Early Kindergarten. Separately, the board approved, by motion of Anne Vance seconded by Plamen Petkov, James and Matthew Smith to attend Sharon Center School at no charge; during that discussion Philip O’Reilly asked whether staff members are generally charged tuition.
Principal Carol Tomkalski additionally announced student recognitions: Joanna (Asia) Haratyk received the Superintendent Award; Eloise (Lucy) Salazar and Keely Malone were named CABE award recipients.
The policy change is a first reading and remains subject to the planned technical edit (the principal sign-off page). The board also asked Superintendent Melony Brady-Shanley to share further information with members as requested earlier in the meeting. The tuition decisions and policy language will affect how the district bills and admits nonresident students and staff-family enrollments going forward.
