Sharon board trims Sharon Center School budget by $68,979 to meet Board of Finance request

Superintendent Melony Brady-Shanley told the board the Board of Finance had requested a reduction to reach a net 0% impact; she presented two options for cuts. After discussion among board members, Anne Vance moved — and Philip O'Reilly seconded — a motion to adopt the $68,979 reduction. The motion carried unanimously.
The decision followed conversation about which line items to trim. Board members discussed the need to show a reduced total when sending the budget to the Board of Finance and the town, and Anne Vance withdrew an earlier motion that had omitted the explicit new total before proposing the final motion that specified $6,065,001.
Superintendent Brady-Shanley also briefed the board on other administrative planning tied to the budget, including upcoming teacher negotiations and outreach steps the board plans to take before the Town Hearing. The board directed staff to prepare a one-page cover sheet to accompany the budget at the Town Hearing on April 25, 2025.
No formal vote records beyond the roll-call consensus were presented in the minutes; the motion to adopt the reduction passed on a unanimous voice/consensus recorded in the minutes.
The board will reconvene in May for additional policy first readings and to continue administrative and bargaining preparations.
