Sharon Board certifies Connecticut nutrition standards for 2025–26, approves limited exceptions for event sales

The Sharon Board of Education on March 10 voted to certify that food offered for sale to students will comply with the Connecticut Nutrition Standards for the period July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026, pursuant to C.G.S. Section 10‑215f. The certification covers items offered for sale separately from reimbursable meals, including school stores, vending machines, culinary programs and fundraiser sales. The motion to certify was made by Board member Nancy Hegy Martin and seconded by Board member Kathleen Visconti; the minutes record no discussion before the motion carried.

Separately, the Board approved a motion, made by Nancy Hegy Martin and seconded by Philip O'Reilly, to allow the sale of food items that do not meet the Connecticut Nutrition Standards and beverages not listed in C.G.S. Section 10‑221q under the following conditions: (1) the sale is connected with an event occurring after the regular school day or on the weekend; (2) the sale takes place at the event location; and (3) the items are not sold from a vending machine or school store. The minutes define an "event" as an occurrence involving more than a regularly scheduled practice, meeting, or extracurricular activity (for example, soccer games or school plays are events but practices and rehearsals are not). The "regular school day" is defined in the minutes as the period from midnight before to 30 minutes after the end of the official school day.

According to the minutes, both motions were carried unanimously and there was no substantive discussion recorded. The certification will be in effect for the 2025–26 school year as stated in the motion.
